Bio

Darmody grew up in the suburbs of Sydney, finally moving to the United States after graduating from the University of New South Wales with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and Arts. Her upbringing taught her the importance of travel and has inspired her to continue seeking out culture and new experiences. Darmody has a deep appreciation nature, particularly the Australian natives - a major source of inspiration. Darmody uses travel as a vessel for finding new experiences and new stories and she brings them to life with her creative interpretation.

Darmody's practice engages with abstraction via a painterly exploration of colour, structure, lines, layers, composition and gesture. Darmody's art is a form of visual storytelling interested in conveying moments and interactions. She works primarily with paint and non-traditional materials but has been known to dabble in sculpture, ceramics and digital media. Darmody continues to exhibit internationally and within Australia.

Artist Statement

Darmody’s delicate exploration of the human condition, frequently unveil in multidisciplinary forms that play with the oscillation between historical and contemporary. Finding inspiration in themes of nature, nomadism, spirituality, primitivism and the experiential.  Communicating through layers of overlapping paint and mixed media, the artist expresses moments at every gesture. Borrowing from the history of image making – from the iconography of ancient cultures to digital arts, collage art and architecture – Darmody creates floating worlds that mimic and celebrate human experience and our surroundings. As images are decontextualised, each abstracted appropriation embodies her deep fixation with beauty.

Instituted by Abstract Expressionist and Colourist approaches to art, methodologies form an important impetus behind the development of Darmody's practice, whilst centring on the alchemy of painting. Harnessing the modernist philosophy of 'art for art's sake', the artist dismantles the expectation of preconceived narratives, paving way for sensuality and temporality to culminate within an aesthetic space.
